What Impressed Us: The complexity of the project and the skillful execution of an innovative design. Emily has a years-long history of projects for FFA and 4H competitions, which demonstrate a clear passion for STEM and for improving the agricultural backbone of our country.

Her Next Move: Emily is pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree at Texas A&M University.

Tell us a little bit about you

This year, I served as the Helotes 4-H Club President and my FFA Chapter’s Treasurer. Whether I’m mentoring someone through their first weld, helping troubleshoot a project, or explaining my project at an Ag Mechanics show, I strive to lead by example. I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about directing others, it’s about uplifting them, being approachable, and creating opportunities for growth. I take pride in setting high standards for myself and showing others what’s possible with hard work and determination.

What inspired you to pursue a STEM career?

My dad introduced me to woodworking and welding at a young age. He was my first Ag Mechanics teacher, and his standards for workmanship are high. He taught me everything I know.

I attended a Women of Welding Camp at Texas State University during my sophomore year of high school. It was a grant-funded opportunity that provided 20 high school female students from across the US the opportunity to attend a week-long camp and learn new skills. This was a pivotable experience that opened my eyes to the possibilities for women in Agricultural Mechanics and STEM-related careers.

Any advice for young women pursuing a STEM career?

Find hands-on projects to practice and learn and find female mentors who can show you what is possible.
