Compression and Canister

Compression load cells have compact, solid construction to measure large compressive forces with a small footprint. They are a standard choice for heavy-duty weighing. Canister load cells are the most common style: a sealed, cylindrical body with the load applied to a button on top. We carry ANYLOAD and AmCells compression load cells in alloy steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Compression Load Cell Uses

Several cells can share the weight of one structure, so they’re widely used under tanks, silos, and hoppers, in truck and rail scales, and in presses and test stands. In a multi-cell system, a summing junction combines the signals so the indicator reads one total weight.

Choosing a Compression Load Cell

  • Capacity: divide the maximum total load by the number of cells, then add a safety margin for off-center loads and shock.
  • Material: alloy steel is a cost-effective choice for dry, indoor use. Stainless steel resists corrosion in washdown, outdoor, and chemical environments. Aluminum keeps weight down in lighter-duty applications.
  • Environmental protection: varies by model. Compare the level of environmental resilience, or IP rating, to the application’s requirements. Many stainless steel models are sealed for wet or outdoor locations. See What Does the IP Rating of a Load Cell Mean?
  • Mounting: this class of load cell needs a flat, rigid base and a load path that stays vertical. Our weigh modules and mounting hardware help maintain load alignment and compensate for side loads and thermal expansion.
